Is Fifty Shades Of Grey Harming or Helping the BDSM Community?
As we speak, women around the world are being introduced to BDSM for the first time by reading Fifty Shades of Grey… or are they? The author of Fifty Shades EL James is completely unaware of BDSM except for her research. What she wrote is romance novel where she substituted BDSM for vampirism. The 20 million copies of Fifty Shades do nothing to educate curious housewives about real BDSM.
In the article “Is Fifty Shades of Grey Giving Bondage a Bad Name?” Pamela Stephenson Connolly is worried that Fifty Shades is portrayed as something that needs to be “cured”. I’m also worried that the uneducated masses will use Fifty Shades as a textbook instead of seeking out legitimate sources of information. The first time some ignorant couple gets seriously injured because they tried something in Fifty Shades, there will be witch-hunt for those of us who practice real BDSM in a safe, sane and consensual manner.
I think the success of Fifty Shades of Grey is a double-edged sword. Largely, the media has taken a positive view on the concepts within the book, but this could always change. Some readers of Fifty Shades may seek out the BDSM community and we should be available to them. There are some people in the BDSM community that want to go further underground and avoid these newbies and that’s a mistake.
The BDSM community has a responsibility to guide and educate the curious. Fifty Shades of Grey can either do harm, or be seen as an opportunity. Sticking your head in the sand could mean getting bit in the ass!
Do you think Fifty Shades of Grey is more harmful or more helpful to BDSM? I want to hear from you! Contact me at dirk@dirkhooper.com or leave a comment below.
Dream hard,
Dirk Hooper
