Can BDSM Help You Be Clean and Sober?

This week The Fix presented an article by Rachel Kramer Bussel about how people have successfully used BDSM to stay clean and sober.  The piece notes San Francisco’s Safeword which is a kink-flavored 12-step program established by BDSM author/educator Mollena Williams.  There are also a number of quotes from BDSM players on how the BDSM community and kinky events have helped them on the road to recovery.  I would highly advise reading the full article.

Those of us in the lifestyle know the power of “subspace,” a natural high similar to the “Runner’s High”, that a good scene can bring to the players (and Doms can feel as well).  It should be no surprise to discover that people are trading the unnatural high from drugs or alcohol for the natural high from BDSM play.

Another aspect of a BDSM relationship is power exchange.  Dominants set out restrictions and submissives set boundaries throughout the relationship.  These protocols and limits are exceptionally effective in reinforcing positive behavior in a fun, but very real way for the players.  In a healthy relationship this power exchange can be used to guide a submissive to get healthier, deal with insecurities, meet personal obligations, and… in this case, stay clean and sober.

I’d like to hear your thoughts and stories about BDSM and sobriety.  Please contact me directly at dirk@dirkhooper.com or leave me a comment below.

Buck Angel Interviewed by Princess Zoe for The Fetish Show

Princess Zoe got an opportunity to set down with Buck Angel while they were both in Dallas.  They talk about Buck being on the board for the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance, his two new videos and his recent trip to SXSW.

Buck was kind enough to mention that I did the photography for the front of his new video!

Mistress Ezada’s Summer Camp

Here’s a summer camp that beats the shit out of anything you went to as a kid!  Mistress Ezada is offering a summer camp in France that is styled on the “Other World Kingdom” concept where submissive men live 24/7 as a slave to all the dominant women.  Hogspy has all the information on the camp in the article below.

Normal or Not? A Sexual Attraction to Objects

With the release of the latest edition of the mental-health manual, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (the DSM), LiveScience takes look at some of the disorders it defines. What the new DSM says is that a true fetish, which is a sexual attraction to objects (or something like feet or hair), is only a disorder if “the attraction causes him significant distress, impairs his ability to function or could lead him to harm others.”

This is good news for kinky people because it removes the automatic stigma associated with clinical fetishism.  It’s another major victory for kink world, and there have been several over the past year alone.

Shibari session by Stefano Laforgia and Ishemia in Bondage Cafe (Saint Petersburg, Russia) Camera and Editing by Shatter

Many people have seen the results of a shibari session through photography but very few have seen what the process is like.  This video is an excellent example of the beautiful and intimate connection that takes place between the rigger and the person being tied.

Just look at the spacey expression on her face near the end of the video and you see why so many seek out this experience.

Your Rights as a Submissive

Do submissives have rights?  Of course they do!  Unfortunately a lot of people who are new to BDSM may not understand that when they enter into a BDSM relationship as a submissive that there are some fundamental things that they should expect.  I think this list of “rights” by Sir Conor does an excellent job of defining what submissives should expect.  I think people who find themselves on both sides of the whip should read this article, but particularly if you are new to the scene.

10 things your Dominant does not tell you

Goddess Eden shares a very honest list of things that may be a revelation to some submissives.  Many of these things are contrary to popular belief.  While these thoughts are certainly not universal to all dominants, they do represent the fact that dominants have fantasies, hopes and fears that are similar to everyone else.

Sometimes being a dominant means displaying a strong and unwavering front, but there is a real person beneath the role.  Admitting these things can be difficult when a submissive wants and needs you to be a rock, so that they can let go.  It’s important to note that the courage it takes to admit these things actually makes you a better dominant.

Google Trends: Pakistan Is World Leader for Gay Porn Searches

Since Pakistan is easily one of the least tolerant nations when it comes to being gay, you have to either laugh or cry when you hear that Pakistan leads the world in searches for gay porn.  The hypocrisy here is exceptionally high, and points out that you can’t change people’s nature, even if you try to suppress it.
