This was a leap forward on several things at once. Over the past few months I’ve been working on my style and focusing a lot on backgrounds and color. All of this came together at the same time here.
I recently took a Udemy class on coloring comics from Kurt Michael Russel and this led to a big step forward on my figure colors. And ironically, it ended up taking less time that it usually does… isn’t that always the way?
I’ve also learned how to make the background detailed but how to make sure it doesn’t overwhelm the figure and how to make the whole piece more cohesive with color.
Finally, I was lucky to have such an amazing subject for this piece.
Of course, I realize that I see things and challenges that I’ve been struggling with that others don’t see or care about. I hope that even if you don’t see the individual accomplishments here that you enjoy this piece and see where I’m going overall.
