This set was taken in Dallas at the Belmont Hotel. I tried to get a unique effect with the magic hour sky through the porthole, but it’s tricky and I thought I had more time to shoot than I actually did.
I think the description that model Apple Angel gave to this set of photos sums it up really well, “eerie and gorgeous”! I wanted to do something that was different from the pin-up style photos that Apple Angel does and more in line with my own fetish photography. She chose lingerie by “What Katie Did” and I chose a wonderful Power Flogger from “Punish Petal” to complete the photos. I like the results we got and I hope you do too!

I picked “We’ll just call it a unicorn” from MadisonKink.com as the feature story for this FETISHWEEK because it brings up some realities about BDSM public play and the law. I’ve been to my share of play parties, both public and private. The concern is always that no matter how much preparation went into the event, it may not be sufficient to keep you out of jail.
Frankly, if the police, or the city council, or your neighbors, just want to cause problems for you there are ample opportunities. I don’t care how many copies of “Fifty Shades of Grey” are sold; people who practice consensual BDSM are at a considerable disadvantage when it comes to the law. My advice would be to know your local laws better than the police who may visit you, keep a low profile and make friends with some kinky lawyers… they are your best line of defense. Literally.

The big news in BDSM this week was catalyzed by an article that ran in Newsweek titled “Spanking Goes Mainstream” by Katie Roiphe. The article explored the booming popularity of the BDSM erotic novel “Fifty Shades of Grey” and what it means to post-modern feminism. Roiphe believes that as women get more powerful in the boardroom, they seek the release of submission in the bedroom. The shitstorm of blogosphere activity from a number of highly talented kink writers was both quick and loud. Those of us in the lifestyle don’t typically enjoy outsiders digging around in something they don’t understand and speaking to the public in such an authoritative manner.
I’ve included the original article and several of the reaction articles below. The topic of feminism and kink roles is meaty to be sure. Personally, I think that Roiphe conveniently omits the surge in women taking on dominant roles in BDSM, and the cultural signposts of femdom. Where does the dominatrix fit within the discussion of feminism?
My own particular interest is following the media and how they portray the kink lifestyle. Whether you agree with Roiphe or not, her article is indicative of a radical shift in the attention and seriousness that the mainstream media is now focusing on fetish and BDSM. “Fifty Shades of Grey” has created intense interest in kink and the media is struggling to catch up. As a member of the BDSM community, we should all do our best to put good information out to the public, and keep an eye on what others are saying about us.

The story that stood out the most this issue is the tale of Hollie Stevens, a porn performer (including clown porn… yes, look it up) who is fighting bone cancer. When faced with the prospects of not being able to do her job and pay her mounting medical bills, her friends stepped up to help out.
In particular interest to FETISHWEEK readers, professional dominatrix January Seraph offered additional time to people who would donate to Stevens. That’s a great story for the BDSM community for two reasons. It certainly flies in the face of conventional wisdom that assumes that a professional dominatrix is not capable of such compassion (a misconception that Princess Zoe and I have had to fight on The Fetish Show and at numerous appearances).
The most important reason this is such a great story is that it’s so damn rare that you get a positive story about people who work in the adult entertainment industry, much less in the world of kink. I’ve provided two different takes on this story below, so maybe… just maybe, things are changing for the better.

I met Domme Victoria a week ago and got three quick sets together. This is the first set from the day of shoots.
The bathroom in her hotel room was so clean and modern that I had to shoot in there and when I saw her pink latex dress I just knew it would POP in that setting! She had brought one of those cool steel anal hooks and I thought it would be fun to shoot with that and her pretty pink butt plugs. You can make up your own story from there.

I shot this set with the lovely Apple Angel in Dallas a couple of weekends ago. The concept behind the shoot was hers and was inspired by a set with Dita Von Teese.
I used natural light in this set and I’ve never gotten such great results before. I think the results are half due to the new lens I’m using, half due to the new camera and half due to my own recent experiments with natural light… wait, I think that’s too many halves!

I hope you have some extra time on your hands because frankly, this FETISHWEEK is packed! I’m still playing a bit of catch-up after my computer crashed so this is a double issue. Thanks to everyone who said nice things or had advice over the past couple of weeks.
Fetish or BDSM news doesn’t get any bigger than changing the constitution in Canada and that’s exactly what my friend, dominatrix Terri-Jean Bedford did! You can read about the specifics in the Feature Story, but basically she fought and won a battle with the government that will help protect dominatrix and sex workers in Canada. It’s a great achievement, and while I have no illusions about changing the laws in America, at least there’s a cool breeze of sanity from the north.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA, April 4, 2011 – Fine-art photographer Dirk Hooper found inspiration in the “glam” theme for the “Biting the Apple” exhibition. “Glam”, which is a truncated version of “glamour”, evokes the fashion of the past, but is even more associated with glam rock. The Individual Artists of Oklahoma Gallery hosts the 21st annual event celebrating adult art and performance on April 13th and 14th this year.
Dirk Hooper said, “I had just returned from a stay at the Albuquerque Hard Rock Hotel when I heard about the theme for this year’s show. An idea came to mind instantly. Apple Angel gathered several members of her TNT Burlesque troupe and the shoot came together so quick. I’m so happy with how the whole project turned out.”
Hooper’s inspired photo will be on display along with dozens of other visual and performance artists at the event this weekend. The photo features several members of TNT Burlesque including founder Apple Angel, Lily DeathStarr, Jezabel Minx and Eva Aphrodisia. Make-up by Johnny and J. Austin Hair Design provided the unique look for the models.
“Biting the Apple 21: Glam!” will run for two nights, April 13-14th, from 7pm to Midnight. Besides the visual art that will fill the gallery, the event will feature two stages of performance art from TNT Burlesque, Jabee Williams, Balthazar, Perpetual Motion Dance, The Ladies of the Boom, 7 Deadly Sins and 2XLP. One of the things I talk about constantly on The Fetish Show is how the fetish culture has become so ingrained in popular culture. In maybe no place (besides music videos) is the rise of kink imagery more prevalent than in the world of fashion. Major mainstream fashion houses are incorporating the iconic looks and toys of BDSM into their lines. The runway at the recent New York Fashion Week looked more like a dungeon crawl.
Fashion is not shying away from the comparison either. The 2012 SHOWstudio Shop exhibition “Selling Sex” launched a series of fashion films and performances by women who work in the fashion industry. The film below is the first in the “Fetish Fashion” series and is directed by Ruth Hogben and features model Karlie Kloss. Since Kloss stars in both roles, you can easily say that the concept is the duality of BDSM (Dominant/submissive, Mistress/slave, etc.).

Dirk Hooper’s FETISHWEEK – PayPal’s Ban on Erotic Fiction

I took a long vacation in Tucson and now I’m dealing with a computer crash, so I’m a little behind… but I’m catching up!
The Feature Story in this issue of FETISHWEEK is how PayPal tried to ban the sale of ebooks that had what they deemed to be objectionable content. What was the content affected by the ban?
“PayPal told the booksellers they may not sell works of fiction that include sexual fantasies containing themes and implied scenarios of: pseudo-incest (including “daddy” fantasies, step-family), incest, fantasies about non-consensual sex or rape, bestiality (widened to include non-human fantasy creatures), and BDSM.
Under the new PayPal policy, Mark Corker of Smashwords told all the Smashwords authors they would also have to remove paranormal romance that included shape-shifters – if the shape-shifters were to have sex in their non-human forms.”
PayPal backed off (mostly) from their stance after a shitstorm of bad media attention and rightly so. PayPal has a monopoly when it comes to online payment. Furthermore, who the hell is PayPal to serve as the moral arbiter of what content their customers consume?
The next issue of FETISHWEEK focuses on the viral explosion of the ebook “50 Shades of Grey”, which the PayPal ban would have affected specifically. Given the popularity of “50 Shades of Grey” I think it proves outright that PayPal’s definition of obscene does not match the general public.
