I recently got contacted by Catherine Johnson-Roehr, the Curator of Art, Artifacts and Photographs for the Kinsey Institute, who was very kind to send me some photos and tell me about how the show was going at Indiana State University. About my work and the exhibition, she said, “There was an excellent turnout for the event, and we heard many positive comments about the show. Your piece really stands out, as it is hung at the end of a wall that divides the gallery into two spaces. It is also the most colorful work in the show, as many of the photographs are b/w.”

Thanks to Catherine Johnson-Roehr for sending these photos and telling me about the event. It was a high point in my year, and this has been a very good year for me!

You can see the photos she sent, and I’ve attached the press release below as well.

Dream hard,
- Dirk

Photographer Dirk Hooper Featured Artist in “Shape of Us: Selections from the Kinsey Institute Art Collection”
Fetish and fantasy photographer Dirk Hooper is among several artists chosen to participate in “Shape of Us: Selections from the Kinsey Institute Art Collection” at Indiana State University.

09.23.2010– TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA, September 20, 2010 – Fetish and fantasy photographer Dirk Hooper is among several artists chosen to participate in “Shape of Us: Selections from the Kinsey Institute Art Collection” at Indiana State University. The travelling exhibition runs September 20 through October 16 at The University Art Gallery in Terre Haute, Indiana.

“The Shape of Us” focuses specifically on body shape and variation celebrating form and diversity. The show displays the human form in all its variety as well as a commentary on how physical form/shape effects personal identity and sense of self. “It’s an honor to be associated with any show the Kinsey Institute creates,” Hooper said, “but the concept of this exhibition strikes at the very heart of my work so the recognition is even more special to me.”

University Art Gallery Interim Director Erin Caldwell said, “To give you a little background, the Kinsey Institute was founded in 1947 by pioneering sex researcher Alfred C. Kinsey. Today, the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction conducts active research programming to address scientific and societal questions about sexual behavior, gender differences, decision-making, human relationships and personal and public health. The Kinsey Institute also has an in house gallery as well as an extensive collection of art, artifacts, books and photography.”

“Our exhibition here will be a slightly altered version of their original show,” Caldwell said. “The curatorial process was focused specifically on variation of body shape and celebration of form and diversity. The show is meant to first and foremost celebrate the human form in ALL its varieties.” Other featured artists include Herb Ritts, Mariette Pathy Allen, Laurent Benaïm, Grace Benedict, Lynn Bianchi, John Alexander Scott Coutts, William Dellenback, Eric Godal, Anthony Gordon, Vic Green, Robert Lomis, George Platt Lynes, Brad Miller, Angelo Victor Mercure, Kevin O. Mooney, Dianora Niccolini, Erwin Olaf, Michael Rosen, J.D. Talasek, Forrest Solis, Jordon Griffin Tate, Sam Wang, Gilbert Brown Wilson, and Yelena Yahontova.

The University Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursdays. It hosts exhibitions, visiting artists, and scholars throughout the academic year. Calendars are available at the gallery’s front desk. The gallery’s mission of exposing cutting edge contemporary art to ISU and Terre Haute would not be possible without the support of Arts Illiana, Indiana Arts Commission, College of Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Art.

Steampunk Photo

One of Hooper's Steampunk photos in the "Steampunk" Art Exhibition.

TULSA, OKLAHOMA, May 24, 2010 – Fantasy photographer Dirk Hooper will be among seven other Oklahoma artists in the “Steampunk” art exhibition at the Art-N-Style Gallery beginning, Saturday June 5th.  The show will have a cross-section of illustrators and photographers who will present their own interpretation of the steampunk genre.  The exhibition is curated by artist Mike Kennedy and will be the first time many of these creators have displayed work in this unique genre.

Steampunk is sub-genre of fantasy and science fiction, typically set within the 19th century when steam power was prominent and characterized by Victorian-style fashion mixed with fictional inventions like those of writer Jules Verne.  Dirk Hooper said, “The look and attitude of steampunk are very much in line with my fantasy and fetish photography.  When Mike Kennedy contacted me about this show I got very excited by the prospects of working with the genre.”  While new to the world of steampunk, Hooper sees this exhibition as a beginning of a long-term project.  “Creating the photos for the ‘Steampunk’ show has been a blast and ideas are now coming fast and furious.  I’m officially adding this genre to my body of work,” Hooper said.

Dirk Hooper will have four sepia-toned metallic prints on display at the “Steampunk” art exhibition.  Models for the photos include Oklahoma-based professional dominatrix Princess Zoe, Tulsa model Prince, Oklahoma City model Jade and members of steampunk sideshow performance group “Carnival Epsilon,” Marcus, Ivy and Rose.  Photographer Dirk Hooper, Princess Zoe and many of the other models for the photos will be in attendance for the opening night event.

The “Steampunk” art exhibition will feature Oklahoma-based artists:

  • Shawn Wilson, a 20 year veteran graphic designer and comic artist
  • Phil Hollecker, a science fiction and fantasy illustrator trained on the west coast
  • Wykkd Lenz (Cyn Burton), journalistic photographer recently featured on the BBC’s “The Week That Was”
  • Alain Viesca, fantasy artist specializing in digital art and illustration
  • Mike Kennedy, published creator of over 20 comics and working artist for over 30 years
  • Lucy Adams, comic artist with a passion for color work
  • and Zack Raw, a Tulsa artist who will display art for the first time in the “Steampunk” art exhibition.

Opening night for the “Steampunk” art exhibition will be June 5th at 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.  The show will be located at the Art-N-Style Gallery, 1334 East 41st Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Refreshments will be provided and there will be live music by “The Annie Perkins Band”.   The exhibition will run through June 30th.  For additional information about the show, please contact Mike Kennedy at 918-935-5387.

OKLAHOMA CITY, November 3, 2009 – World-renowned fetish photographer Dirk Hooper had two pieces chosen for Art Scene Today’s “Erogenous Zones” international juried competition. The exhibition will be available for view on Art Scene Today’s website for the month of November and showcases erotic art from New York, Virginia, California, Colorado and Oklahoma, to places as far away as Hawaii and Germany.

Dirk Hooper’s photo “Pink Kitty” won a third place award in the “Erogenous Zones” exhibition and features Austin Texas professional dominatrix Mistress Kitty. The piece was culled from a series of fetish photos taken over a day-long session. “I really enjoyed working with Mistress Kitty and it’s great to just have one of our photos accepted into the show, but to have the piece win an award too is very exciting,” Hooper said.

Hooper’s second photo accepted into the show is “Inked” with Toxic Goddess Dame Lebeau. “Inked” has the distinction of being accepted into three different juried shows. The piece was also a part of the Individual Artist’s of Oklahoma “Biting the Apple” exhibition earlier this year and last month’s “Dirty Show 10.5” in Detroit Michigan. “I’m proud to share this accomplishment with Dame Lebeau. It’s so much fun to work with her that she makes my job very easy,” said Hooper.

“Erogenous Zones” will be available to view during the month of November at the Art Scene Today website located at artscenetoday.com. Dirk Hooper will be the featured artist for one week starting November 23rd which includes a large representation of the “Pink Kitty” photo, an artist’s statement, bio and a short interview available on the site. Shortly following the “Erogenous Zones” show the work of all participating artists will be published in an exhibition catalog.

Photographers Robert Henry and Dirk Hooper Collaborate on Art for Visually Impaired Awareness

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA, October 8, 2009 – Award-winning fine art photographer Robert Henry and world-renowned fantasy photographer Dirk Hooper will participate in the upcoming “Out of Sight” juried exhibition at the Individual Artists of Oklahoma gallery. The show is joint venture between the IAO gallery and the Oklahoma League for the Blind and will feature a wide variety of artwork and creators who have been given a unique opportunity to express themselves in a way that is designed to appeal to the visually impaired and sighted alike. The theme for the show is to present high contrast art, with 2D works being black on a white background, and 3D art being entirely black. Visitors will be encouraged to touch the work.

Robert Henry and Dirk Hooper collaborated on the piece in the show. Henry shot the original photo, Hooper did the post-production work and they shared the set design and lighting chores. “The final result was a fascinating study of two approaches to the same subject and how they tell the same story but in a different way. I imagine it is a lot like co-authoring a book with another writer,” Henry noted. The two photographers often work together, but this is their first piece that is a pure collaboration. Henry said, “I think it is a great image that merges our creative forces.”

In addition to the stark visual contrast of a white gallery space versus the black artwork, the audio portion makes “Out of Sight” even more unique. Participants were asked to record an artist’s statement for a cell phone audio tour. Hooper said, “The recording allows us to explain our work in a way that actually adds something special to a group show. It’s an element that will give everyone a greater understanding of what they are looking at and what the artist intended.”

“Out of Sight” will be at the Individual Artists of Oklahoma Gallery from October 16th through November 6th. The opening reception is Saturday, October 17th from 6pm to 9pm. The IAO Gallery is located in its new location at 706 West Sheridan Avenue in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. For more information please visit the IAO website, www.iaogallery.org.
