DALLAS, TEXAS November 18, 2010 – Episode nine of The Fetish Show features an exclusive hour long interview with gender and identity politics advocate Buck Angel. Buck Angel is a female to male transsexual adult film star, who has travelled the world spreading his message of self-acceptance to places as diverse as Yale University, Idea City, Spike TV, The Tyra Banks Show and the Howard Stern Show. The interview is available through The Fetish Show website, http://thefetishshow.com or through subscription services like iTunes.

Buck Angel is redefining gender and educating an entire generation on the fluidity of sexuality. Since Buck coined the phrase “It’s not what’s between your legs that defines your gender,” the term has become an anthem for men and women everywhere who have been inspired by his message of acceptance.

The Fetish Show host Dirk Hooper said, “Zoe and I are very proud to present a positive interview with the one and only Buck Angel. It was our goal to give Buck a forum to present his history, ideas and philosophy in a way that is rarely presented in the mainstream media. This interview fits well with the mission of The Fetish Show to present information that is both fun and informative to an audience that is hungry for serious content about sex, the fetish culture, erotic art, adult performance, and the BDSM lifestyle.”

I recently got contacted by Catherine Johnson-Roehr, the Curator of Art, Artifacts and Photographs for the Kinsey Institute, who was very kind to send me some photos and tell me about how the show was going at Indiana State University. About my work and the exhibition, she said, “There was an excellent turnout for the event, and we heard many positive comments about the show. Your piece really stands out, as it is hung at the end of a wall that divides the gallery into two spaces. It is also the most colorful work in the show, as many of the photographs are b/w.”

Thanks to Catherine Johnson-Roehr for sending these photos and telling me about the event. It was a high point in my year, and this has been a very good year for me!

You can see the photos she sent, and I’ve attached the press release below as well.

Dream hard,
- Dirk

09.23.2010– TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA, September 20, 2010 – Fetish and fantasy photographer Dirk Hooper is among several artists chosen to participate in “Shape of Us: Selections from the Kinsey Institute Art Collection” at Indiana State University. The travelling exhibition runs September 20 through October 16 at The University Art Gallery in Terre Haute, Indiana.

“The Shape of Us” focuses specifically on body shape and variation celebrating form and diversity. The show displays the human form in all its variety as well as a commentary on how physical form/shape effects personal identity and sense of self. “It’s an honor to be associated with any show the Kinsey Institute creates,” Hooper said, “but the concept of this exhibition strikes at the very heart of my work so the recognition is even more special to me.”

University Art Gallery Interim Director Erin Caldwell said, “To give you a little background, the Kinsey Institute was founded in 1947 by pioneering sex researcher Alfred C. Kinsey. Today, the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction conducts active research programming to address scientific and societal questions about sexual behavior, gender differences, decision-making, human relationships and personal and public health. The Kinsey Institute also has an in house gallery as well as an extensive collection of art, artifacts, books and photography.”

“Our exhibition here will be a slightly altered version of their original show,” Caldwell said. “The curatorial process was focused specifically on variation of body shape and celebration of form and diversity. The show is meant to first and foremost celebrate the human form in ALL its varieties.” Other featured artists include Herb Ritts, Mariette Pathy Allen, Laurent Benaïm, Grace Benedict, Lynn Bianchi, John Alexander Scott Coutts, William Dellenback, Eric Godal, Anthony Gordon, Vic Green, Robert Lomis, George Platt Lynes, Brad Miller, Angelo Victor Mercure, Kevin O. The University Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursdays. It hosts exhibitions, visiting artists, and scholars throughout the academic year. Calendars are available at the gallery’s front desk. The gallery’s mission of exposing cutting edge contemporary art to ISU and Terre Haute would not be possible without the support of Arts Illiana, Indiana Arts Commission, College of Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Art.

Toxic Goddess Featured in Darkfaery Subculture Magazine

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA, September 17, 2010 – Alternative modeling troupe Toxic Goddess is featured in a seven page article in issue six of Darkfaery Subculture Magazine. The article, written by Jacob A. Grim, is a comprehensive look at Toxic Goddess from it’s inception in 2004 until today. Photos by founders Robert Henry and Dirk Hooper run throughout the article and showcase Toxic Goddess models, from the past to the present.

“This article represents the most encompassing treatment that Toxic Goddess has ever received,” said photographer Dirk Hooper, “and outside of an art gallery, I’ve never seen our work printed better. This is definitely a collector’s item for fans of Toxic Goddess.” Toxic Goddess models Rockelle, Oshun and Dame Lebeau were interviewed for the article as well as founders Robert Henry and Dirk Hooper.

Issue Six of Darkfaery Subculture Magazine also has articles and photos of April A. Taylor, Vira Dee Undead, the Midwest Ink and Metal Fest, True Blood season three and A.R.G.O. Suspension Team of Tulsa. The magazine is available for purchase online at http://www.magcloud.com/browse/Issue/109773, and at newsstands and Darkfaery Subculture Magazine event appearances.

Darkfaery Subculture Magazine has been an underground alternative source for music, costume, and art enthusiasts since it launched as ‘dark zine’ on the streets of Dallas, Texas in 1985. It has since undergone several transformations since moving to Oklahoma City from the paper zine known as The Vampire’s Playground in 1993 to the diskette compuzine of the same name, until finally it reached a large enough fan base to become Darkfaery Subculture Magazine Online in 1997.

Through the years it has been DFSM’s mission to bring together the underground music, art, and fashion scenes that have, in the past, tried to remain exclusive and reclusive unto themselves. DFSM is committed to stamping out pretension among the genres so that fans and industry professionals can come together to create something memorable, and darkly beautiful, for years to come.

DFSM reflects a unique lifestyle which both its readers and publishers strive to be a part of. Featuring and attending local events, conventions, DFSM continues to transcend the labels and prejudices placed upon the freakish, interesting, weird world upon which we live.

Toxic Goddess is part modeling troupe, part art movement and part cultural phenomenon. Founders Robert Henry and Dirk Hooper conceived of Toxic Goddess as a way to present their work to the public in the best way possible and are joined by makeup artist Danger Darling and effects artist Scott Van Eck. The guiding principle of Toxic Goddess is to do alternative modeling in a way that not only represents and showcases women in a positive and empowering manner, but to back that up by making the actual models part of the creative process and to share in the venture’s success. Toxic Goddess wants to reach out to, unify and promote, various underground communities including music, fashion, art and alternative social groups, particularly if they are run by or positive toward women. Visit ToxicGoddess.com for more information.
